An extensive treatment planning is the key for success in esthetic reconstructions. The planning should start with diagnostics. An evaluation of the esthetics is necessary. It can be based on the direct investigation of the patient, but more important is the work with photos and in the last time also videos are used. A lot of analysis can be done with simple methods, for instance using common PC programs like PowerPoint.

An excellent design and, in the second place, the predictability of results are very important when restoring teeth in the esthetic zone. In most esthetic dentistry cases, a re-design of the shape and contour of the respective teeth is required. In conventional treatment procedures, this is accomplished by means of a wax up. This also can be done digitally today. Once approved by the patient, the wax-up represents the basis for all the working steps that are carried out in the course of the treatment.

Very frequently, the wax-up is used to fabricate splints for so-called mock-ups or provisional restorations. Those temporary restorations play a more and more important role within the treatment concepts. Moreover, silicone matrices are made to ensure control of the amount of tooth structure removed during preparation. These matrices enable the mandatory minimum layer thickness to be observed and the shape and contour of the final restoration previously defined by means of the wax-up to be reproduced. To provide patients with a restoration whose appearance is very close to that originally defined in the treatment plan is crucial to treatment success.

Following tooth preparation, the new situation will be scanned again and matched with the data of the case already stored in the computer. The digital wax-up can then be used for the design of the final restoration. The modern, highly esthetic all-ceramic materials available today even allow full-contour restorations to be milled, which only need to be stained and glazed. In challenging cases, a slight cut-back can be performed to optimize the result.

Cementation is the last and a very important part of this complex. The thinner the ceramic thickness, the more important is to pay attention to the underground color and the type of cement. All in all, this is a completely new way of achieving highly esthetic outcomes in the management of restoration cases. It allows the predictability of results to be increased in a very cost-effective way.

Current Concepts in American Dentistry: MIDDLE EAST PROGRAM

The Linhart Continuing Dental Education Program at New York University College of Dentistry provides the administrative support for the "Current Concepts in American Dentistry" program. Its teaching staff includes College of Dentistry faculty, alumni, and outstanding educators and researchers from other institutions and from private practice. Within the stimulating educational forum provided by these clinicians, the program seeks to create and expedite innovative modes of presentation and to maintain New York University's leadership role in the field of continuing dental education.

Objective/Purpose:

To provide "state-of-the-art" information regarding dental implantology, aesthetics and oral rehabilitation; to develop a biological rationale for proper treatment planning based upon sound scientific and clinical principles; to understand the integration of surgical and prosthetic components of Implantology; to successfully evaluate the quantity and quality of radiographic analyses including CT scans, panoramic x-rays and periapical x-rays; to enhance proper case selection for maximum clinical success. The program emphasis will be on scientific evidence-based knowledge and clinical experience to enable participants to utilize increased knowledge and skills in treating patients for maximum success. This clinically oriented educational experience will illustrate cosmetic and prosthetic concepts and procedures for constructing restorations that are of the highest technical, biologic, and cosmetic quality.

Duration and Prerequisite:

* Total of 5 sessions: 3 sessions of 5 days each in New York and 2 sessions of 3 days in Abu Dhabi.
* All sessions in New York University will include oral presentations and live TV demos and surgeries.
* Each participant needs to attend all at 5 sessions.
* Each participant needs to deposit a written report in their preferential topic selected from the title of the course.
(minimum 20 pages) at the session #5 in NYU. Preparation of these written report will start from #1 session in Abu Dhabi and will be finalized during the session #4 in Abu Dhabi to be ready for submission in NY under the supervision of Dr. Philippe Tardieu.
* Each participant needs to orally present 2 clinical cases in Session #4 in Abu Dhabi in their select specility.

The Science of a Natural Smile

In the search to achieve a pleasant composition of the Smile, some factors of esthetic composition should be observed to guide our technical and clinical works. Four factors may be effectively applied to the smile:
Reference Structures, Proportions, Symmetry, Perspective (Shade & Shape).
However, when looking at a face, it is also important to observe the individualization of each case, since the relationship between the teeth, gingival tissues and lips, harmoniously arranged in the facial composition.
The science of a natural smile provides the basic foundation for communicating all the principles of esthetics necessary for the fabrication of anterior dental restoration.

Lithium Disilicate (LS2) Story of success in the cosmetic world

By using modern diagnostic methods and newly developed All-Ceramic materials, the patient receive highly aesthetic and functional restorations, important prerequisites for the successful outcome of the treatment include good communication between the dentist and dental technician.
Nowadays, the use of glass-ceramic materials such as the Lithium Disilicate (LS2) material is the textbook approach in terms of the esthetic integration for two good reasons:
These materials offer the possibilities of creating unique translucent restorations which mimic the dental enamel.
The wide range of cementation possibilities facilitates the creation of lifelike results.

Veneers & the Laminated Ceramics

The main indications for veneered ceramics have varied over the Corse of time, initially indicated for treating and correcting any type of color alternation of the teeth, the development of dental materials that have replaced some indications for more conservative treatments has also broadened in scope. An excellent design and, in the second place, the predictability of results are very important success factors when restoring teeth in the esthetic zone. In most esthetic dentistry cases, a re-design of the shape and contour of the respective teeth is required. In conventional treatment procedures, this is accomplished by means of a wax up. Once approved by the patient, the wax-up represents the basis for all the working steps that are carried out in the course of the treatment. Very frequently, the wax-up is used to fabricate splints for so-called mock-ups or provisional restorations. Moreover, silicone matrices are made to ensure control of the amount of tooth structure removed during preparation. These matrices enable the mandatory minimum layer thickness to be observed and the shape and contour of the final restoration previously defined by means of the wax-up to be reproduced. To provide patients with a restoration whose appearance is very close to that originally defined in the treatment plan is crucial to treatment success.

Especially as far as the design is concerned, nearly all the steps involved are performed by means of computers today. There is not a single car in the world that is created without the help of computer-aided design (CAD) programs. Therefore, we should also take esthetic dentistry to the next level by no longer fabricating physical wax-ups but creating them in digital form on computers instead. The first step involves the digitization of the jaws. This can be done by means of the models or directly in the oral cavity. Additionally, a bite registration is made. The result is a three-dimensional digital image, which can be displayed on a computer screen. This offers a lot of advantages: Design databases can be utilized to achieve quick and case-related results. Functional movements can be simulated. Prior to the digital-to-material conversion, ideas can be discussed with the patient by displaying the three-dimensional images on a computer screen. The wishes of the patient can be taken into account immediately. Functional aspects can be included. Once the digital proposal has been accepted by all the relevant partners, the virtual design can be used for various purposes, such as milling a wax-up or an acrylic splint, for example.

Following tooth preparation, the new situation will be scanned again and matched with the data of the case already stored in the computer. The digital wax-up can then be used for the design of the final restoration. The modern, highly esthetic all-ceramic materials available today even allow full-contour restorations to be milled, which only need to be stained and glazed. In challenging cases, a slight cut-back can be performed to optimize the result.
All in all, this is a completely new way of achieving highly esthetic outcomes in the management of restoration cases. It allows the predictability of results to be increased in a very cost-effective way.

The digital therapeutic chain in the dentistry is expanding more and more. Primary CAD/CAM systems were a replacement for conventional production methods in the dental laboratory as well as the use of digital data was applied to get more planning reliability. The field of applications is now escalating. Hereby the different digital processes are always linking and can't nearly be separated in the future. One technique will involve another - otherwise the complete process chain would be absurd.

This lecture will show the different process steps by a digital process chain which starts with the data collection directly at the patient. Different ap-proaches and the needed machines as well as their functionality will be de-scribed and the the existing interfaces will be discussed. You will get a com-plete overview of a possible future process between patient, dentist and laboratory / milling center. To keep the survey of the different developments in the CAD/CAM is often a very time - consuming business. An excellent design and, in the second place, the predictability of results are very important success factors when restoring teeth in the esthetic zone. In most esthetic dentistry cases, a re-design of the shape and contour of the respective teeth is required. In conventional treatment procedures, this is accomplished by means of a wax up. Once approved by the patient, the wax-up represents the basis for all the working steps that are carried out in the course of the treatment. Very frequently, the wax-up is used to fabricate splints for so-called mock-ups or provisional restorations. Moreover, silicone matrices are made to ensure control of the amount of tooth structure removed during preparation. These matrices enable the mandatory minimum layer thickness to be observed and the shape and contour of the final restoration previously defined by means of the wax-up to be reproduced. To provide patients with a restoration whose appearance is very close to that originally defined in the treatment plan is crucial to treatment success.
